Sewage Inflow into Nagpur’s Shahi Qabristan Sparks Outrage

Nagpur: The historic Shahi Qabristan in Tajbagh is facing a serious hygiene crisis as sewage continues to enter the cemetery, sparking widespread outrage among local residents. They have urged the management committee and the Nagpur Municipal Corporation's (NMC) Nehru Nagar zone to take immediate corrective measures.

Residents Demand Urgent Action

Locals have warned that the situation could deteriorate further with the onset of the monsoon if timely action is not taken. The issue was brought to light by a resident of Yasin Plot in Prabhag 30, who called for urgent intervention to preserve the sanctity and dignity of the burial ground.

Media professional Sameer Ishaq expressed his distress, stating, “At the very least, let those resting in their graves rest in peace. The committee must stop the drainage inflow or coordinate with the concerned corporator for immediate action.”

Committee Acknowledges Problem

Taj Ahmed, secretary of the Shahi Qabristan management committee, acknowledged the issue and said steps are being taken to address it. He explained, “The sewer line along the compound wall is old and undersized. We have requested a larger pipeline. Overflowing chambers spill wastewater into nearby lanes and the cemetery. The same problem was reported two months ago.”

Ahmed also noted that frequent blockages are caused by encroachments in the Yasin Plot area, which exacerbate the sewage overflow.

Municipal Corporation Responds

Vikas Raibole, assistant commissioner of the Nehru Nagar zone, assured that the issue would be resolved soon. He stated that the NMC is aware of the problem and is working on a solution to prevent further sewage ingress into the cemetery.

Residents hope that the authorities will act swiftly to restore the sanctity of the Shahi Qabristan and prevent a public health hazard, especially ahead of the monsoon season.
