Jamshedpur: Two teenagers who ran away from their village in West Singhbhum district on May 21, allegedly to get married, died after being run over by a train under Sonua police station limits in the early hours of Monday. Police said preliminary investigation points towards a suicide pact.
Incident Details
The deceased were identified as Arjun Mahato, 15, and Kushbu Mahato, 17. Both were neighbours and studied at the same school. According to Shashibala Bhengra, officer-in-charge of Sonua police station, the duo was run over by a train between 12:30 am and 1 am.
Background
Preliminary police investigation revealed that the teenagers had allegedly fled their homes in Bhalurungi village on May 21 to get married. Police recovered a bag containing clothes and train tickets from Sonua to Rourkela in Odisha, as well as onward journey tickets from Rourkela to Puri. Tickets from Tatanagar to Chakradharpur railway stations were also found near the railway tracks.
Investigation
No suicide note was found at the scene, an official said. Bhengra stated, "Prima facie, it appears to be a suicide pact. However, a detailed investigation is underway." The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, and further inquiries are being conducted to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the tragedy.
