Trichy: Two four-year-old children drowned after falling into an uncovered water-filled construction pit near their house in Nagapattinam district on Wednesday. Police identified the deceased as S Praveen Sai and S Pavan Sai, both from Sikkal. The cousins were staying at their grandfather's house at Sikkalpatthu during the holidays. The boys went out to play near the house but did not return for a long time on Wednesday, police said. Worried family members searched for them and discovered the children in an underground water pit built for water storage on a newly constructed house.
Velankanni police retrieved the bodies and sent them to Nagapattinam Govt Medical College Hospital for postmortem. They registered a case under Section 194 (unnatural death) of BNSS and are investigating. This tragic incident highlights the dangers of uncovered construction pits, especially in residential areas. Local authorities have been urged to enforce safety measures to prevent such accidents. The families of the deceased are in deep shock and mourning the loss of their young ones.
