A youth was brutally thrashed by a mob in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, on Wednesday after being accused of stealing a goat. The incident took place in the Ahiyapur police station area, where residents caught the young man allegedly attempting to flee with a goat. The locals tied his hands and feet and beat him with sticks.
Rising Cattle Thefts Anger Locals
Incidents of cattle and goat theft have reportedly increased in the locality in recent days. A goat was stolen two days ago, which had already angered the villagers. The thefts have created an atmosphere of fear and frustration among the residents, leading to vigilantism.
Police Intervention and Rescue
Upon receiving information, Dial 112 and Ahiyapur police immediately reached the spot, where a large crowd had gathered. Police pacified the villagers and rescued the youth from the mob. He was later taken to Shri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) for treatment. Ahiyapur SHO Rohan Kumar said, “Some of the accused’s accomplices fled the spot during the incident. Raids are being conducted to arrest them.”
Accused's Background
The youth has been identified as a resident of Laxmi Chowk under Bamhapur police station area. He is the son of a retired agriculture officer. Police revealed that the youth is addicted to smack and used to commit petty thefts to sustain his addiction. This addiction likely drove him to steal the goat.
Police Investigation Underway
Police have registered a case and are conducting raids to nab the accomplices who fled the scene. The authorities are also investigating the mob assault and will take appropriate action against those involved. The incident highlights the growing problem of cattle theft in the region and the tendency of locals to take the law into their own hands.
