A Russian drone attack early on 22 June 2026 killed three members of a family in Ukraine's Sumy region, local authorities reported. The strike occurred at approximately 4:50 am local time (0150 GMT) in the northeastern region near the Russian border.
Details of the attack
The victims were identified as a father, mother, and their adult son, whose names have not been released. The drone hit their residential property, causing a fire that destroyed the home. Emergency services extinguished the blaze and recovered the bodies from the rubble.
According to the Sumy Regional Military Administration, the attack was carried out using a Shahed-type loitering munition, commonly used by Russian forces in strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure and civilian areas. The region has faced repeated drone and missile attacks since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
Impact on civilians
The Sumy region, which borders Russia's Bryansk and Kursk oblasts, has experienced frequent cross-border shelling and drone incursions. Local governor Volodymyr Artiukh stated that the attack "once again demonstrates the terrorist nature of the enemy, who targets peaceful settlements." He expressed condolences to the victims' relatives and urged residents to heed air raid warnings.
Ukraine's State Emergency Service reported that over the past 24 hours, Russian forces launched 17 drone strikes across the country, with the majority intercepted by air defense systems. However, the attack in Sumy region resulted in the only confirmed fatalities.
Regional context
The Sumy region has seen intensified attacks in recent weeks as Russian forces attempt to pressure Ukrainian defenses along the northeastern front. The city of Sumy, the regional capital, lies about 30 kilometers from the Russian border and has been a frequent target of glide bombs and artillery.
In a separate incident on the same day, Russian shelling in the Kharkiv region wounded four civilians, according to local officials. The ongoing conflict has caused thousands of civilian casualties and displaced millions since its escalation.
