The United Arab Emirates has moved to accelerate a major oil pipeline project that will allow the country to bypass the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments. The directive was issued by Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed during an executive committee meeting, according to state oil company ADNOC.
The project, known as the West-East Pipeline, is already under construction and is now expected to begin operations in 2027, earlier than previously scheduled. The pipeline will transport crude oil from the western oil fields to the port of Fujairah on the eastern coast, providing an alternative export route that avoids the Strait of Hormuz.
Strategic Importance
The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman through which about 20% of the world's oil passes. Tensions in the region have often raised concerns about potential disruptions to oil shipments. The West-East Pipeline will enhance the UAE's energy security by offering a direct route to the Gulf of Oman, reducing dependence on the strait.
ADNOC stated that the pipeline is part of a broader strategy to increase the country's oil production capacity and ensure reliable exports. The fast-tracked timeline reflects the urgency of diversifying export routes amid geopolitical uncertainties.
Project Details
The pipeline has a capacity to transport up to 1.5 million barrels per day, which would cover a significant portion of the UAE's current crude output. The project includes storage facilities at Fujairah, which already serves as a major oil hub. The accelerated development is expected to involve increased investment and streamlined approvals.
Industry analysts have welcomed the move, noting that it will provide greater flexibility for UAE oil exports and reduce vulnerability to any potential blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The project also aligns with the UAE's long-term economic diversification plans.
