QatarEnergy Confirms 13 Dead, 66 Injured
QatarEnergy released an updated statement confirming 13 fatalities and 66 individuals undergoing medical treatment. The company emphasized that none of the injured are in a life-threatening condition. The deceased included Indian and Pakistani nationals, while the injured comprised citizens of Qatar, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania, Nigeria, and Nepal.
"QatarEnergy extends its heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of those who lost their lives, and prays for the swift recovery of those injured. QatarEnergy pledges its full support to those affected by this tragedy," the statement read.
Cause of Explosion: Technical Malfunction
Qatar's Ministry of Interior reported that preliminary findings indicate the explosion resulted from a technical malfunction during operations at the facility. The ministry assured that no leak posing a threat to individuals or the environment had been detected. "The Ministry of Interior, in coordination with the competent authorities, confirms that no leak resulting from the incident has been detected that would pose a threat to the safety of individuals or the surrounding environment," the ministry stated.
QatarEnergy emphasized that the incident was an operational accident and "not sabotage or hostile in nature." The Barzan gas facility had been completely halted since December 2025 for urgent maintenance and restarted only two days before the incident. Production at the facility remains suspended as damage assessments are underway.
Emergency Response and Investigation
Emergency response teams from QatarEnergy and Qatar's Civil Defence swiftly contained and extinguished the fire. Search operations at the site have been completed, and all injured persons were transported for medical care. The Ministry of Interior is continuing investigations to determine the precise technical causes and will implement necessary measures under legal and technical frameworks.
QatarEnergy confirmed that its LNG facilities, Ras Laffan Port, logistics operations, and export capabilities remain unaffected by the explosion. The company is working to assess damage to the Barzan facility and nearby infrastructure.
