FBI Formally Charges Brother-Sister Duo in Alleged IED Incident at Critical US Military Installation
In a significant development, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has formally charged a brother-sister duo for allegedly placing an improvised explosive device at a crucial United States military base. The incident occurred at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida, which serves as the headquarters for both United States Central Command and the US Special Operations Command.
Details of the Charges and Suspects
According to official statements from FBI Director Kash Patel, the primary suspect, identified as Alen Zheng, is currently in China and faces multiple serious charges. These charges include attempted destruction of government property using fire or explosives, as well as making and possessing an unregistered destructive device.
His sister, Ann Mary Zheng, has been arrested and charged with being an accessory after the fact and with evidence tampering. She is currently in custody awaiting further legal proceedings.
Official Statements and Investigation Progress
"An IED was placed at MacDill Air Force Base - home to CENTCOM and US Special Operations Command. A brother and sister have now been indicted," stated FBI Director Kash Patel while sharing information about the incident on social media platform X.
He further emphasized the bureau's commitment to pursuing justice, adding: "This FBI, working with our partners, will continue pursuing all those responsible and ensure they are brought to justice, no matter where they are."
In a separate statement to Fox News Digital, Patel highlighted the investigative efforts behind the indictments: "Today's indictments are the result of tremendous investigative work from our FBI teams and great coordination from our state, local, and federal partners across the board."
Strategic Importance of the Targeted Base
MacDill Air Force Base represents one of the most strategically important military installations in the United States. As the headquarters of CENTCOM, it oversees critical military operations including Operation Epic Fury against Iran. Simultaneously, it serves as the home of US Special Operations Command, which coordinates special operations forces across the entire Department of Defense.
Timeline of the Incident and Discovery
The FBI's Tampa field office first reported the discovery of a suspicious package outside the visitor center at MacDill Air Force Base on March 16. This discovery triggered an immediate investigation that ultimately led to the identification and charging of the two suspects.
Director Patel made the bureau's position unequivocally clear regarding such incidents: "No one who targets our brave service members and military facilities will ever get away with it — and this FBI will pursue all those responsible for the incident at MacDill Air Force Base to the ends of the earth."
The case continues to develop as authorities work to coordinate international efforts regarding the suspect currently located in China, while maintaining domestic legal proceedings against the suspect in custody.
