Indian National Among Two Killed in Abu Dhabi Missile Debris Incident

An Indian national was tragically killed, and another Indian citizen was injured, when debris from a ballistic missile intercepted by United Arab Emirates (UAE) air defence systems fell in Abu Dhabi on Thursday. The Abu Dhabi Media Office confirmed the fatalities in an official statement, highlighting the ongoing regional tensions.

Official Confirmation of Casualties and Nationalities

In a post on social media platform X, the Abu Dhabi Media Office detailed the incident, stating it occurred "as part of the ongoing follow-up to the previously reported incident caused by falling debris following the successful interception of a ballistic missile by air defence systems." The statement explicitly noted that the event resulted in the deaths of two individuals of Pakistani and Indian nationality. Additionally, three people sustained injuries ranging from serious to moderate; they were identified as Emirati, Jordanian, and Indian nationals.

Debris Falls on Sweihan Street After Interception

Earlier reports from Abu Dhabi authorities indicated that emergency services responded to an incident involving falling debris on Sweihan Street. This occurred after UAE air defence systems successfully intercepted a ballistic missile. The initial announcement described the aftermath: "The incident resulted in the deaths of two unidentified individuals, three injuries, and damage to a number of cars." Emergency teams were deployed immediately to the busy area, where several vehicles were damaged and people were injured by the falling wreckage.

UAE Air Defenses Actively Counter Iranian Threats

The UAE Ministry of Defence had earlier in the day announced that its air defences were actively responding to incoming missile and drone threats originating from Iran. In a statement shared on X, the ministry asserted, "UAE air defences are currently responding to incoming missile and drone threats from Iran. MOD asserts that the sounds heard are the result of the Air Defence Systems intercepting missiles and drones." This incident is part of a broader pattern of attacks in the region linked to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran.

Rising Toll and Public Advisory

The latest debris incident has contributed to a rising death toll in the UAE, which now stands at 11 people since the conflict escalated. According to the UAE Ministry of Defence, since the start of the hostilities, air defences have intercepted a significant number of threats:

  • 357 ballistic missiles
  • 15 cruise missiles
  • 1,815 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)

As of Wednesday, 166 people had been injured, with casualties including several foreign nationals, among them Indians. In light of the situation, the Abu Dhabi Media Office urged the public to rely solely on official sources for information, advising against spreading rumours or unverified reports to prevent misinformation during this critical time.
