Iran and Oman Hold High-Level Talks in Muscat
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araqchi met with his Omani counterpart, Seyyed Badr Al-Busaidi, in Muscat on Saturday to discuss strengthening bilateral relations, regional developments, and maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz. The meeting underscored ongoing diplomatic efforts between Tehran and Muscat amid heightened regional tensions.
Focus on Maritime Security and the Strait of Hormuz
According to a post on Araqchi's official Telegram channel, the two diplomats exchanged views on mechanisms to ensure the safe transit of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, in line with Article 5 of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. The statement noted that both sides discussed bilateral relations in various fields and broader regional developments, with particular emphasis on the strategic waterway that carries about 20% of the world's oil shipments.
Oman Reiterates Support for Diplomacy
Omani Foreign Minister Al-Busaidi emphasized his country's principled stance on utilizing diplomacy to prevent the escalation of regional conflicts. He expressed hope that the full implementation of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between Iran and the United States would lead to an improvement in the region's security situation. Oman has long served as a mediator in regional disputes, including facilitating indirect talks between Tehran and Washington.
Regional Context: Qatari Mediation and US-Iran Tensions
These talks come as Qatari negotiators travel to Iran in an effort to ease tensions and create conditions for the resumption of US-Iran negotiations following recent military escalations. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump stated on Friday that Washington has agreed to continue talks with the Islamic Republic after Tehran's request, but reiterated that the previous ceasefire between the two sides is considered "over." The developments highlight ongoing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Persian Gulf region.
Strategic Importance of the Strait of Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil supplies, with about 17 million barrels per day passing through it. Security of the strait has been a recurring issue in Iran-US tensions, with periodic confrontations involving naval forces. The Islamabad MoU, signed earlier this year, includes provisions for safe passage and de-confliction mechanisms.
Bilateral Ties Between Iran and Oman
Iran and Oman share historically close relations, with Oman often acting as a neutral intermediary in regional conflicts. The two countries have cooperated on energy, trade, and security matters. The meeting in Muscat reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation across various sectors, including economic and cultural exchanges.
