UAE Declares State of Defence Following Iranian Missile and Drone Onslaught

The United Arab Emirates has officially declared a "state of defence" in response to a severe wave of missile and drone attacks originating from Iran. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs characterized the assaults as "brutal and unprovoked Iranian aggression", detailing that more than 1,400 ballistic missiles and drones have been launched towards the country in recent weeks.

Details of the Attacks and Casualties

According to the ministry's statement, these attacks specifically targeted civilian infrastructure and key facilities across the UAE, including areas in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Locations near airports, ports, hotels, and military installations such as the US-operated Al Dhafra Air Base were struck. The assaults have resulted in civilian casualties, with at least four people killed and over 100 injured, primarily from falling debris as Emirati air defence systems intercepted the majority of the projectiles.

The ministry reported that defence systems successfully intercepted more than 755 drones and several missiles. However, the interceptions led to debris causing the noted fatalities and injuries. Officials indicated that these incidents are part of a sustained series of Iranian strikes that began in late February.

UAE's Response and International Law Violations

In its declaration, the UAE emphasized that these attacks constitute a flagrant violation of international law and the UN Charter, infringing on the nation's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The statement affirmed, "The UAE stresses that it does not seek to be drawn into conflicts or escalation. However, the UAE reaffirms its full right to take all necessary measures to safeguard its sovereignty, national security, and territorial integrity, and to ensure the safety of its citizens and residents, in accordance with international law and the UN Charter."

The ministry added that the country remains committed to regional stability but reserves the right to defend itself, prioritizing the protection of its sovereignty and residents. This measured response aims to balance defence with a desire to avoid further conflict.

Broader Regional Context

This escalation occurs amidst heightened tensions in the Middle East, with related conflicts involving Israel and Iran. The UAE's declaration highlights the growing security challenges in the region, as nations grapple with cross-border aggressions and the need for robust defence mechanisms. The attacks have prompted concerns over civilian safety and the integrity of international norms, with the UAE calling for adherence to global laws to prevent further violence.

As the situation develops, the UAE's stance underscores a commitment to peace while asserting its rights under international frameworks, setting a precedent for how nations might respond to similar threats in the future.
