The first round of high-level diplomatic talks between the United States and Iran in Switzerland has been suspended after 80 minutes to allow delegations to conduct internal consultations, according to Iran's Fars news agency. The discussions, held at Burgenstock, mark a rare high-level engagement between the two nations.
Historic Meeting Between US and Iranian Officials
US Vice President JD Vance convened with senior Iranian officials on Sunday, initiating a high-level diplomatic effort aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in West Asia. The talks were mediated by Pakistan and Qatar. Vance conveyed Washington's readiness to fundamentally transform relations with Tehran, relaying a directive from President Donald Trump to turn a new leaf in diplomatic engagement.
Highlighting the historic nature of the meeting, Vance stated, "Never before has the Iranian and American leadership met at such a high level. We've already made great progress over just the last few hours, and I expect that we will make additional progress in the hours to come." He cautioned that while these discussions are a vital starting point, they are unlikely to yield an immediate resolution. "Peace is never easy. Peace always requires a little bit of work. It always requires a little bit of give and take," he added.
Key Issues on the Agenda
The discussions primarily address Tehran's nuclear programme and critical obstacles within a fragile interim agreement, including the operational status of the Strait of Hormuz. Key stakeholders are involved in the talks, which aim to de-escalate regional tensions.
Trump's Escalatory Warning Amid Talks
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump issued an escalatory warning on Sunday, demanding that Tehran "immediately stop their highly paid proxies in Lebanon" or face further military action. The warning was posted on his social media platform, Truth Social: "Iran must immediately stop their highly paid PROXIES in Lebanon from causing trouble. If they don't, we'll hit Iran very hard again, just like we did last week, only harder!!!" This aggressive posture came as diplomatic efforts in Switzerland aimed to defuse volatility across the region.
