Vietnam's Embassy in India on Sunday expressed condolences for the loss of 15 Indian nationals in a tourist boat capsizing accident in Vietnam. The incident occurred on 11 July 2026 near Hon May Rut Ngoai Island off Phu Quoc, when a speedboat carrying 36 people, including 32 Indian tourists, overturned due to adverse weather conditions.
Condolence Messages from Vietnamese Leadership
Vietnamese President To Lam and Prime Minister Le Minh Hung sent messages of condolences to their Indian counterparts, President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The messages, shared by the embassy on social media, conveyed sincere sympathies and deepest condolences from the Party, State, Government, and people of Vietnam to the State and people of India, especially the families of the victims.
The Vietnamese leaders affirmed that competent authorities have urgently undertaken and continue to carry out search and rescue operations, provide medical treatment for the injured, support the victims' families, and coordinate closely with the Indian side to address the consequences of the accident. An investigation and verification are also underway to clarify the cause of the incident.
Foreign Minister Extends Condolences
On the same day, Vietnam's Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung sent a message of condolences to India's External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, further underscoring the solidarity and sympathy from Vietnam's diplomatic channels.
According to the Indian Embassy in Vietnam, all 15 people killed in the accident were Indian tourists. The boat capsized in An Giang Province, a region known for its waterways and tourism. The accident has prompted both nations to enhance coordination in search and rescue efforts and victim support.
