Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed gratitude to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for its continued support to Ukraine, particularly in the context of the ongoing war with Russia. During a meeting with EBRD President Odile Renaud-Basso, Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of the bank's financial assistance in stabilizing Ukraine's economy and rebuilding critical infrastructure.
Focus on Chornobyl Restoration
A key topic of discussion was the restoration and preservation of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant site, which was severely damaged during the Russian occupation in the early stages of the invasion. Zelenskyy emphasized the need for international cooperation to ensure the safety and security of the site, which remains a significant environmental concern. The EBRD has been instrumental in funding projects at Chornobyl, including the construction of the New Safe Confinement structure to contain the remains of the reactor that exploded in 1986.
EBRD's Role in Ukraine's Recovery
Odile Renaud-Basso reaffirmed the EBRD's commitment to supporting Ukraine's recovery and reconstruction efforts. The bank has already provided billions of euros in loans and grants to help the country maintain economic stability and fund essential services. Discussions also covered potential investments in energy efficiency, green technologies, and the modernization of Ukraine's energy sector, which has been heavily impacted by Russian attacks.
Zelenskyy and Renaud-Basso also touched upon the broader challenges facing Ukraine's economy, including the need for sustained international financial support to address the humanitarian crisis and rebuild damaged infrastructure. The meeting underscored the strong partnership between Ukraine and the EBRD, which has been a key ally in the country's development for decades.
The restoration of Chornobyl is not only a matter of environmental safety but also a symbol of Ukraine's resilience and determination to overcome the consequences of both the 1986 disaster and the recent war. The EBRD's continued involvement is seen as crucial in ensuring that the site is properly managed and that future risks are minimized.
