The decision follows high-level discussions between Prime Minister Albanese and Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates. The UAE has faced a wave of aerial attacks, with Albanese revealing that it has intercepted over 1,500 rockets and drones fired by Iran in retaliation for US-Israeli strikes. With an estimated 24,000 Australians residing in the UAE, the government's priority is to ensure their safety and support allied nations.
Albanese emphasized that Australia's role will remain strictly defensive. He stated, "My government has been clear that we're not taking offensive action against Iran, and we've been clear that we are not deploying Australian troops on the ground in Iran."
