Punjab-Based Medical NGO Guides 50 Indian Graduates to US Residencies

In a significant achievement for the Indian medical community, nearly 50 medical graduates have successfully matched into residency programs in the United States through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). This milestone was facilitated by the mentorship of the '5 Rivers Heart Association,' a medical charity organization founded by Punjab-origin cardiologist Dr. Swaiman Singh, who is associated with UC Davis California.

Financial and Professional Benefits for Resident Doctors

Those matched as resident doctors in US institutes are projected to earn approximately $200,000 to $250,000 over a three-year residency period. This translates to nearly Rs 2 crore, offering substantial financial rewards alongside world-class medical training. The residency positions are at premier institutions, providing an invaluable foundation for their careers.

Humanitarian Commitment and Mentorship Model

The 5 Rivers Heart Association operates on a unique model where intensive mentorship is provided in exchange for a commitment to humanitarian service. All members pledge to be ready to serve in crises when called upon, with each participant required to complete 28 days of on-the-ground service in real-world humanitarian efforts. This approach not only advances medical careers but also fosters a spirit of global health service.

Expansive Impact and Prestigious Placements

Dr. Swaiman Singh, speaking from the US, highlighted that for the past 12 years, the organization has offered free, high-impact mentorship to aspiring medical professionals from high school to medical school levels. To date, it has guided over 150 students into matched residencies in the American medical system, including 51 this year alone. The majority of mentees are from India, representing various states, and have secured coveted positions at prestigious institutions such as the Mayo Clinic, Harvard University, University of California campuses, and the University of Pennsylvania.

This initiative underscores the growing trend of Indian medical professionals accessing global opportunities while contributing to humanitarian causes, bridging gaps in international healthcare through dedicated mentorship and service.
