Iranian Businesswoman Arrested in Los Angeles for Alleged Arms Trafficking to Sudan
A 44-year-old Iranian businesswoman, whose life appeared to oscillate between opulent international travel and clandestine arms deals, has become the focal point of a significant US federal prosecution. Authorities apprehended Shamim Mafi at Los Angeles International Airport on Saturday night, accusing her of trafficking weapons on behalf of the Iranian government.
Serious Charges and Alleged Transactions
According to the US Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California, Mafi, a resident of Woodland Hills, is charged with violating sanctions and prohibited foreign transactions under 50 U.S.C. § 1705. The indictment alleges she brokered deals for Iranian-manufactured military equipment, including drones, bombs, bomb fuses, and millions of rounds of ammunition, all reportedly destined for Sudan.
In a statement on X, US Attorney Bill Essayli detailed the arrest, emphasizing the gravity of the accusations. If convicted, Mafi faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison, highlighting the severe legal consequences of such alleged activities.
Details of the Alleged Arms Deals
Investigators claim that Mafi utilized an Oman-registered company, Atlas International Business, to facilitate these transactions, with some deals allegedly continuing as recently as 2025. Court documents cite a contract valued at over $70 million for Mohajer-6 armed drones, produced by Iran’s Ministry of Defence and Armed Forces Logistics.
These drones, along with tens of thousands of bomb fuses, were purportedly supplied to Sudan’s Ministry of Defence. Sudan has been embroiled in a violent civil conflict since 2023, making such arms transfers particularly contentious under international law.
Covert Communications and Legal Status
Authorities further allege that phone records indicate Mafi was in direct contact with Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security between December 2022 and June 2025. Prosecutors assert she lacked the necessary legal authorizations to conduct these transactions, compounding the charges against her.
Mafi, an Iranian national, left her homeland in 2013 and became a lawful permanent resident of the United States in 2016. Despite these serious allegations, her public persona painted a different picture, frequently showcasing a luxurious lifestyle on social media with images of global travel and posing with an expensive Mercedes-Benz roadster.
Upcoming Legal Proceedings
Mafi is scheduled to appear in a Los Angeles court on Monday afternoon for her initial hearing, where further details of the case are expected to emerge. This arrest underscores ongoing US efforts to enforce sanctions and combat illicit arms trafficking linked to international conflicts.
