Netanyahu Draws Parallel Between Iran and Nazis on Holocaust Memorial Day
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered a stark address during Israel's annual Holocaust Memorial Day on Monday, drawing direct comparisons between contemporary threats and the horrors of the Nazi regime. He asserted that while Jews historically suffered like "an abused animal crying in agony," the modern State of Israel actively fights back against its enemies to ensure survival.
"No Second Holocaust" Promise Fulfilled Through Action
Netanyahu explicitly linked Iranian nuclear sites to infamous Nazi death camps, stating Israel has practically fulfilled its promise to prevent a second Holocaust. "We promised there would be no second Holocaust, and this year, we fulfilled that promise in practice," the Prime Minister declared.
He warned that without Israeli intervention, locations like Natanz, Fordow, Isfahan, and Parchin could have become eternally notorious, akin to Auschwitz, Treblinka, Majdanek, and Sobibor. Netanyahu highlighted recent military operations against Iran and its regional proxies as decisive actions to neutralize existential threats.
Criticism of Europe's "Moral Weakness"
The Israeli leader issued a severe critique of European nations, accusing them of losing control over their identity, values, and civilizational responsibilities. Netanyahu described Europe as suffering from "deep moral weakness" and suggested that Israel now defends not only itself but also a continent that has forgotten lessons from the Holocaust.
President Herzog Addresses Antisemitism and Domestic Unity
Meanwhile, President Isaac Herzog used the occasion to confront the global rise in antisemitism, emphasizing that "empty words" are insufficient. He urged international leaders to actively combat hatred before it becomes irreversible.
Turning to domestic matters, Herzog framed Israel's current challenges as a test of national character. "We are one family, with a shared destiny," he stated. "A family may argue, but it must never tear itself apart." Despite acknowledging a prolonged campaign, Herzog expressed confidence that Israel would emerge strengthened and empowered.
Observance Theme and Enduring Commitment
This year's Holocaust Remembrance Day carried the theme "The Jewish Family During the Holocaust," focusing on the systematic destruction of Jewish domestic life and the resilience of subsequent generations. Despite security constraints, Israel maintained the solemnity of the observance, reaffirming its core commitments: to remember the victims, defend life, and ensure such atrocities never recur.
The combined messages from Netanyahu and Herzog underscored a dual narrative of vigilance against external threats while fostering internal unity, all anchored in the historical memory of the Holocaust.
