Operation Amistad: India Stands by Venezuela After Quakes

India has reiterated its commitment to stand by Venezuela under Operation Amistad as the country grapples with the aftermath of devastating earthquakes. The Indian Embassy in Venezuela posted on X, "Operation Amistad - India stands in solidarity with the people of Venezuela in these difficult times."

Deadly Toll and Ongoing Rescue Efforts

Rescue and relief operations continue in Venezuela after twin earthquakes struck last week, leaving over 1,900 people dead, according to official sources cited by CNN. National Assembly President Jorge Ramirez, the acting president's brother, announced on Tuesday that at least 1,943 had died, an increase of about 200 from the previous day. However, the casualty figure is believed to be much larger, with the US Geological Survey indicating a high likelihood that tens of thousands are dead.

The United Nations' Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Venezuela, Gianluca Rampolla, said on Monday that the Venezuelan government and the UN are procuring 10,000 body bags in anticipation of more deaths, CNN reported.

Challenges in Relief Operations

In La Guaira, residents continued to pick through the rubble of collapsed buildings, but a government excavator stood idle next to a pile of concrete and bent rebar. When asked why the excavator was not working, the operator said there was no gasoline to fuel it, highlighting the severe fuel shortages hampering relief efforts.

India's Medical Teams on Ground

Indian medical teams are carrying out relief operations in Venezuela under Operation Amistad. On Doctors' Day, External Affairs Minister S.
