Police Response and Suspect Arrest

Billy Aldridge, Chico's chief of police, stated during a news conference that officers responded to a 911 call where the sounds of gunshots and screaming could be heard from inside the library. Upon entering the building, the suspect fled out the back, but additional law enforcement personnel positioned behind the library took the suspect into custody.

Community Impact and Safety Measures

Aldridge described the incident as “very sad, traumatic for a lot of people. Very traumatic for our community.” Streets around the library were temporarily closed, and a family reunification center was established for those who were inside. A child was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Aldridge assured the public there is no serious ongoing threat, and law enforcement is investigating the shooting.
