Chicago Teacher Resigns Over 'GO ICE' Facebook Post, Describes Fallout as Devastating

A veteran teacher from the Chicago area has publicly spoken out after resigning from his position at Gary Elementary School in West Chicago, following a Facebook post that read "GO ICE." He described the fallout as "professionally and personally devastating and surreal," marking his first comments since stepping down.

Career Upended Over Two Words

In an interview with Fox News Digital, the teacher, Heidorn, expressed shock, grief, and uncertainty about his future, stating that the backlash over his two-word post has left him reeling. "I’ve spent 14 years building my career, pouring my heart into teaching kids, building relationships and being a positive role model," he said. "To see it all upended over two simple words… felt like a severe blow to my career."

Emotional Toll and Loss of Connection

Heidorn detailed the heavy emotional toll, describing "sleepless nights" and a deep sense of loss after abruptly leaving the classroom. "Emotionally, it’s been a roller coaster, shock, sadness, anger and frustration at how quickly things escalated," he explained. "The hardest part has been losing daily contact with my students and not getting to say a proper goodbye." He emphasized that his comment was a personal expression of support for law enforcement and was not directed at students or families.

Broader Debate on Free Speech

Beyond his personal setback, Heidorn framed the controversy as part of a larger debate about free speech in the workplace. "Most importantly, this is bigger than me: it’s about whether personal opinions expressed outside of work can cost someone their livelihood without due process," he told Fox News Digital. He noted that teaching has defined his life, and he had even pursued a master’s degree in educational leadership to advance in the profession.

Uncertain Future and Community Support

Now, Heidorn acknowledged that his future in education is uncertain, as he grapples with the aftermath of his resignation. Despite the turmoil, he said he is trying to focus on his family and the support he has received from members of the community, who have rallied around him during this difficult time.

Context of National Division

Heidorn’s post came at a time when the nation was sharply divided over immigration enforcement, with widespread protests erupting across several US cities. These demonstrations followed the fatal shootings of Renee Nicole Good and ICU nurse Alex Pretti by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis earlier this year, sparking calls for accountability and changes to how agencies like ICE operate.

The incident highlights ongoing tensions between personal expression and professional consequences, raising questions about the limits of free speech for educators and other public figures in today’s polarized climate.
