U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday highlighted what he called 'tremendous unity' among NATO allies during the ongoing summit in Washington, D.C., and reported significant progress on increasing defense spending commitments.
Trump's Update to Allies
Speaking to reporters after a closed-door session with alliance leaders, Trump stated, 'I provided other leaders with an update on the steps we're taking to rapidly scale up production in the United States.' The president emphasized that the U.S. is accelerating its manufacturing capacity to meet both domestic and alliance needs.
Defense Spending Targets
According to a senior administration official who briefed reporters on condition of anonymity, several member nations have pledged to reach the 2% of GDP defense spending benchmark sooner than previously planned. The official noted that 'the momentum is building' and that Trump's push for burden-sharing is yielding results.
The NATO summit, which runs through Thursday, is focused on reinforcing the alliance's deterrence posture amid ongoing tensions with Russia and China. Trump's remarks come ahead of bilateral meetings with other leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Alliance Reaction
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed the progress, saying in a statement that 'allies are stepping up' and that the summit is demonstrating 'strong unity and resolve.' He added that defense spending across European allies and Canada has risen for the ninth consecutive year.
Some European diplomats, however, expressed caution about Trump's unilateral tone. 'We appreciate the U.S. commitment, but NATO is a collective endeavor,' a European official said on condition of anonymity.
Trump's appearance at the summit is being closely watched as he seeks to balance his 'America First' agenda with the demands of leading the world's most powerful military alliance.
