Months after Dell Technologies founder and CEO Michael Dell and his wife Susan donated $6.5 billion to seed trust accounts for children linked to former President Donald Trump, the company has secured a massive $9.7 billion contract with the US Department of Defense to provide enterprise software to the military.
Dell-Pentagon Deal Details
According to a CNBC report, the five-year deal, known as the Department of War Enterprise Software Agreement II Core Enterprise Technology Agreement, will see Dell Federal Systems deliver Microsoft 365, advanced cloud subscriptions, and on-premises licensing capabilities. Defense Department CIO Kirsten Davies and acting Navy CIO Barry Tanner stated that Dell won the contract after a competitive process.
“The vendors were all evaluated based on competition, comparison to GSA schedule pricing, and overall chain of value to the department. Going through the process of evaluation, they came out on top,” Tanner explained.
Officials added that the agreement will consolidate licensing across the Pentagon, intelligence community, and US Coast Guard, saving approximately $422 million annually. This deal is part of efforts to streamline IT budgets as the Pentagon seeks approval for a $1.5 trillion fiscal 2027 budget.
Michael Dell’s Donation to Trump-Linked Accounts
Michael Dell’s donation to Trump-linked accounts last year has drawn attention in light of the new contract. Referencing their donation, the Dell couple said in a previous interview, “It’s certainly the largest gift we will have given,” adding that more philanthropic plans may follow. President Trump has praised Dell publicly, urging Americans to “go out and buy a Dell” at a recent White House event. Dell has reciprocated, congratulating Trump on his 2024 election victory and joining his Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.
After making the $6.5 billion donation to Trump accounts for children last year, Michael Dell also donated $750 million to the University of Texas at Austin. The donation will be used to build a new AI-focused medical centre and research campus.
