A man from Jind district was arrested by Panchkula police on charges of stealing mobile phones during the victory celebration of the Municipal Corporation (MC) election results. The incident took place on Tuesday evening when supporters of winning candidates gathered to celebrate.
Incident Details
The accused, identified as Ravi Kumar, a resident of Jind, was caught red-handed by a vigilant crowd while attempting to flee with a bag full of mobile phones. Upon being alerted, police reached the spot and apprehended him. During interrogation, Kumar admitted to stealing phones from the crowd amidst the chaos of the celebration. Police recovered 10 mobile phones of various brands from his possession, valued at approximately Rs 1.5 lakh.
Police Action
Station House Officer (SHO) of the local police station, Inspector Satish Kumar, said that a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. The recovered phones are being returned to their owners after verification. Further investigation is underway to determine if the accused was part of a larger gang involved in similar thefts during public events.
The arrest has been welcomed by the public, who had reported several cases of missing phones during the celebration. Police have advised citizens to remain vigilant and secure their belongings during large gatherings.
