State Bank of India (SBI) branches will operate normally on May 25 and 26 after the proposed two-day nationwide strike by employees was deferred following constructive discussions between bank management and union representatives, as reported by PTI.
Customer Advisory Issued
SBI, in a customer advisory, confirmed that the strike called by the All India State Bank of India Staff Federation (AISBISF) had been postponed. The bank assured its 52 crore customers that all branches would function as usual and provide regular banking services without any disruption. The advisory emphasized that operations would continue seamlessly, alleviating concerns among account holders.
Background of the Strike Call
The strike call was announced earlier this month by AISBISF over a 16-point charter of demands. Key issues included adequate staffing levels, fresh recruitment for various positions, and resolution of long-pending grievances. The federation had sought the recruitment of messengers and armed guards, an end to outsourcing of permanent jobs, a review of career progression schemes, better medical reimbursement, and resolution of HRMS-related concerns. Additionally, the union raised issues about declining clerical recruitment, increasing workload on employees, delays in inter-circle transfers, and pension matters.
Positive Discussions Lead to Deferment
The decision to defer the strike came after what officials described as positive discussions between management and employee representatives at SBI's Corporate Centre in Mumbai on Friday. The meeting yielded progress on several demands raised by the federation. Sudip Dutta, secretary of the SBI Staff Association, Bengal Circle, told PTI: "The meeting with the management was positive and there has been progress on several demands raised by the federation. In view of the developments, the proposed strike has been deferred."
Union Confirms Progress
In a communication to members, All India SBI Staff Federation general secretary L Chandrasekhar stated: "The meeting held today between the management and the federation at Corporate Centre, Mumbai has concluded positively. We are glad to inform you that there have been positive improvements on our demands." He added: "In view of the progress achieved during the discussions, the proposed strike stands deferred." This development has brought relief to customers and ensured uninterrupted banking services across the country.

With the strike deferred, SBI customers can access all regular banking services, including deposits, withdrawals, loan processing, and other transactions, without any hindrance.
