The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has levied a penalty of Rs 1 crore on the contractor responsible for the flyover construction at the T-junction near Maharashtra Nagar in Mankhurd. This action follows a tragic incident on Tuesday night when a piling rig toppled over, resulting in the death of a police constable. Civic authorities confirmed that the overhanging portions of the rig, which had extended onto the road, were successfully removed by Thursday evening.
Safety Lapses Lead to Fatal Accident
Preliminary investigations conducted by civic officials have revealed that safety violations on the part of the contractor were the primary cause of the accident. The BMC is overseeing the construction of a flyover at the T-Junction intersection on the Sion Panvel Highway. The piling rig, which was being used for the project, overturned late Tuesday night at the work site. Despite the penalty, officials have stated that work on the flyover will continue without interruption.
Removal of Overhanging Rig Parts
Following the incident, efforts were initiated to dismantle the fallen rig and its overhanging components, which had collapsed beyond the barricades placed at the accident site. The removal process extended until Thursday evening, by which time all protruding parts of the rig were cleared, as per civic officials.
Legal Action and Investigation
The victim, a 48-year-old police constable attached to the Nehru Nagar police station, lost his life in the accident. The Mankhurd police have registered a case against officials of the construction firm. The BMC's penalty underscores the seriousness of the safety lapses that led to this fatal event.
