Nagpur: GMR Nagpur International Airport Ltd (GNIAL) is set to take over the operations of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport on June 25, as the handover process enters its final phase. A senior official involved in the transition confirmed that the commercial operation date has been officially set for June 25. GMR will assume possession of the airport on that day and immediately commence expansion work.
Coordination for Smooth Handover
Continuous discussions are being held among Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC), GMR, Airports Authority of India (AAI), and Mihan India Ltd to ensure a seamless transition. A meeting chaired by MADC joint managing director Dr Vipin Itankar last week addressed key issues, including the handover of possession and the rehabilitation of project-affected individuals.
Expansion Plans Under Four Packages
The airport expansion is structured into four packages. The first package encompasses civil, structural, finishing, and sanitary work for the expansion of the passenger terminal building. The second package involves the rehabilitation of airside and landside pavements, construction of a new apron, and overlay of taxiways and the perimeter road. The third package covers excavation for airside and landside works, while the fourth includes mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work, along with internal and external lighting for the terminal building.
The official added that GMR's plans include beautifying the old terminal building, constructing a new terminal, and building a second runway by 2029.
Upcoming Visit by MADC Officials
MADC vice-chairman and managing director Deepak Kapoor is expected to visit Mihan on June 15 and 16. The expansion of Nagpur Airport and the development of Mihan facilities are likely to be discussed during this visit.
