Indian govt issues notice to Meta over WhatsApp usernames feature, seeks reply in 3 days
Govt notice to Meta on WhatsApp usernames, reply in 3 days

The Union Government has directed Meta to provide a detailed explanation on the "usernames" feature within three days, according to sources. The government has also instructed Meta not to roll out the feature until consultations are complete.

Privacy Concerns Prompt Government Action

The move follows privacy and safety concerns raised by internet users and domain experts. The government will examine legal mechanisms to potentially block the feature if necessary, particularly over impersonation risks.

According to Meta, a username is an optional unique identifier starting with the @ symbol (e.g., @Name123) that allows others to message or call a user while keeping their phone number private. The username differs from the display name, which does not need to be unique.

How Usernames Work on WhatsApp

People who do not have a user's number saved will see their username by default in group chats, direct messages, or calls. The username always appears with an @ symbol. Usernames are unique per account; if a desired username is taken, the user must choose another. Certain usernames are reserved for businesses, governments, or public figures.

Sources told ANI that authorities will investigate legal avenues to possibly block the feature. "The government will look into WhatsApp's username feature over impersonation concerns. It will look into legal mechanisms to possibly block feature also the legality of WhatsApp's username feature," a source said.

Risks of Impersonation and Cybercrime

Critics argue that allowing anyone to create a username could enable cybercriminals to register handles mimicking others, including officials. This raises significant user safety and digital security issues.

The government's notice underscores the need for compliance with Indian laws before the feature can be deployed. Meta has been directed to respond within three days and to halt the rollout pending further review.
