Karnataka Minister gives Rs 5 lakh to wall collapse victims' kin

Karnataka Minister U T Khader on Wednesday handed over a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the victims of the Nagori wall collapse incident. The tragic event, which occurred earlier this week, claimed multiple lives and left several others injured.

Compensation and Repair Announcement

Speaking to the media after meeting the bereaved families, Khader stated that the state government has released Rs 5 lakh as immediate compensation for each deceased victim. Additionally, he announced that Rs 1.5 lakh would be released to undertake repair works at the site to prevent further accidents. “We are with the families in this hour of grief. The government will ensure all necessary support is provided,” Khader said.

Details of the Incident

The wall collapse took place in the Nagori area of Mangaluru, where a dilapidated boundary wall fell on a group of people, including women and children. Local residents had reportedly raised concerns about the wall's condition prior to the incident. Emergency services rushed to the spot and rescued several injured individuals, who were admitted to nearby hospitals.

Government Response and Safety Measures

Khader, who also holds the portfolio of Housing and Urban Development, directed the Mangaluru City Corporation to conduct a survey of all vulnerable structures in the area. He emphasized the need for strict enforcement of building safety norms. “We will not tolerate negligence. The responsible parties will be held accountable,” he added.

The minister’s visit and the compensation announcement have brought some relief to the affected families, though they continue to demand a thorough investigation into the incident. Local leaders have also called for a comprehensive policy to identify and repair unsafe structures across the city.
