Govt Panel to Clear Container Pile-Up at Major Ports

The Indian government has stepped in to resolve the growing congestion of containers at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), the country's busiest container port in Mumbai. A panel of senior officials has been constituted to eliminate bottlenecks across all 12 major ports, with meetings scheduled weekly or fortnightly to address concerns faced by businesses.

High-Level Review Meeting

The issue of approximately 35,000 to 40,000 inbound containers piled up at JNPA was discussed during a review meeting chaired by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Representatives from the All India Liquid Bulk Importers and Exporters Association also participated in the meeting.

Root Cause of Congestion

According to sources, the pile-up is primarily due to an insufficient number of lorry drivers available to handle the cargo. In an official statement, the shipping ministry noted that containers destined for West Asia have been rerouted to JNPA, placing additional strain on the port and logistics infrastructure.
