The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) has reached out to the state's Labour Minister, G Vivek, requesting his urgent intervention concerning the working conditions for drivers associated with the logistics service provider Porter. The union, representing thousands of app-based workers across Telangana, described the situation as "deteriorating and exploitative."
Financial Strain and Core Demands
In a formal letter, the union stated that repeated complaints to the company have remained unresolved, leading to severe financial and mental stress for the drivers. A primary issue highlighted is the steep reduction in trip payouts, which has plunged many into financial distress. To counter this, the TGPWU has demanded the restoration of fair base fares and per-kilometre rates, coupled with consistent pricing rules to prevent abrupt cuts.
The union also raised the problem of customer cancellations, which cost drivers time, fuel, and potential income. They have demanded that mandatory cancellation charges be paid directly to the affected drivers. Furthermore, with rising operational costs, the TGPWU urged the introduction of a fuel cost adjustment mechanism and an automatic system for toll reimbursement through the Porter app.
Account Blocking, Safety, and Algorithmic Pressure
Another critical concern is the "arbitrary" blocking of driver accounts without a proper inquiry. The union called for a transparent grievance redressal system that provides drivers with prior notice, access to evidence, and an opportunity to explain before any account suspension is enforced.
On the safety front, the union pointed out a significant imbalance. While drivers undergo multiple verification checks, customers are not subject to the same requirement. The TGPWU has therefore demanded compulsory customer verification and the establishment of a 24/7 emergency helpline for drivers.
The letter also detailed the pressure created by platform algorithms, which force drivers to accept long-distance or low-fare trips. Unfair customer ratings that impact future bookings were another grievance. The union insisted that "ratings must be fair and not dictated by unrealistic expectations." Additionally, drivers seek compensation for long waiting times at pickup points, proposing waiting-time charges after the initial five minutes.
Call for Dialogue and Government Action
To address these systemic issues, the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union has sought monthly consultations between Porter management and union representatives. They have requested a formal meeting with the company within seven days and have urged the state labour department to ensure immediate corrective measures are taken.
The union's appeal to Minister G Vivek underscores the growing unrest among platform workers in Hyderabad and across Telangana, calling for fairness, transparency, and dignity in the rapidly expanding gig economy. Attempts to contact Porter for a comment on the allegations did not receive a response.
