Bengaluru: Blooming Trees to Brighten Mysuru-Magadi Road
Blooming Trees to Brighten Mysuru-Magadi Road

The Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) is set to transform Mysuru-Magadi Road into a vibrant avenue lined with blooming trees. The project, part of phase two of the road's development, aims to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the corridor while promoting environmental benefits.

Project Details and Timeline

According to BDA officials, the beautification will involve planting a variety of flowering tree species along the median and sidewalks. The selection includes native and adaptive species that are expected to thrive in Bengaluru's climate. The trees will be planted in staggered patterns to ensure continuous blooming across seasons.

The project includes a three-year maintenance period after planting, during which the BDA will water, prune, and monitor the health of the trees. This phase is critical to ensure high survival rates and robust growth. Following the maintenance period, the BDA will publish an impact study assessing the ecological and social benefits of the green corridor.

Impact Study and Long-Term Maintenance

The impact study will evaluate factors such as air quality improvement, temperature reduction, biodiversity enhancement, and public satisfaction. The findings will guide future urban greening projects in Bengaluru. After the study, the avenue's maintenance will be handed over to the BDA's regular civic maintenance wing.

Residents and commuters have welcomed the initiative. 'This will make our daily commute more pleasant and contribute to a greener city,' said a local resident. The project aligns with Bengaluru's broader vision of creating sustainable urban spaces.

Broader Context of Urban Greening

The Mysuru-Magadi Road beautification is part of a larger trend in Bengaluru to integrate nature into infrastructure projects. Previous initiatives include tree planting along major roads like NICE Road and Outer Ring Road. The BDA aims to replicate the success of these projects, which have improved microclimates and provided habitats for birds and pollinators.

Phase two of the road development includes not only tree planting but also the installation of pedestrian pathways, cycle tracks, and improved street lighting. The overall project is expected to be completed by early 2027. The BDA has allocated a budget of INR 15 crore for the beautification component.
