Chennai Port Corridor Gets Rs 3,500 Crore Double-Decker Upgrade

The Chennai Port–Maduravoyal Corridor project is advancing rapidly as a transformative infrastructure initiative. The 20.9 km elevated road is designed to enhance freight movement and urban traffic efficiency across the city. Originally planned as a single-tier structure, the project has now been upgraded to a double-decker design with an additional investment of Rs 3,500 crore. This significant redesign aims to separate heavy freight traffic from local vehicular movement, thereby reducing congestion and improving travel times.

Double-Tier Design for Enhanced Capacity

The upgraded corridor features a double-tier structure that substantially increases its capacity. The upper tier is exclusively dedicated to container trucks and port-bound freight vehicles. This ensures uninterrupted cargo flow directly between industrial zones and Chennai Port, bypassing city traffic. The lower tier is designed for urban traffic, equipped with 13 entry and exit ramps at key locations. These ramps improve connectivity across Chennai and ease congestion along major routes near the Cooum river corridor.

Strategic Ramps and Connectivity

The ramps are strategically planned at high-density junctions including Sivananda Salai, College Road, Spur Tank Road, and Koyambedu. This will facilitate smoother movement and significantly reduce travel time across Chennai's busiest traffic corridors. The integration of these ramps ensures that local commuters benefit from reduced congestion while freight traffic remains separate.

Advanced Engineering Features

The project incorporates modern cable-stayed bridges at critical junctions such as Napier Bridge. These bridges enhance structural strength and durability, ensuring seamless connectivity across challenging urban and waterway crossings. The advanced engineering approach guarantees long-term reliability and safety for both freight and passenger traffic.

Boost to Chennai Port Capacity

Once completed, the corridor is expected to dramatically improve logistics efficiency. It will increase Chennai Port's cargo handling capacity from the current 53 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to nearly 200 MTPA by 2047. This expansion will strengthen trade connectivity and support economic growth in the region. The project represents a major step forward in modernizing Chennai's infrastructure and enhancing its role as a key logistics hub.
