Iran-US-Israel Tensions Trigger Sharp Price Hikes in LPG and Edible Oils in Nagpur

The escalating conflict between Iran and the US-Israel axis is now having a direct impact on domestic economies, with Nagpur witnessing significant price surges in essential commodities like LPG cylinders and edible oils. This development is expected to exacerbate financial pressures on households while increasing operational costs for local businesses such as hotels and restaurants.

LPG Cylinder Prices Soar Amid Geopolitical Unrest

In a notable shift, the price of the 14 kg domestic LPG cylinder, commonly used by households, has jumped from ₹905 to ₹964.50, marking a steep increase of ₹59.50. This adjustment has affected consumers across the board, including those who had pre-booked cylinders at the older rates. For instance, Archana Shahu, a resident of Besa, expressed frustration after being asked to pay an additional ₹60 upon delivery, despite having paid ₹905 three days prior. She questioned the fairness of such retroactive charges, highlighting the confusion and burden on consumers.

Commercial users are also feeling the pinch. The 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder, essential for hotels, restaurants, and small enterprises, saw its price rise from ₹1,944.50 to ₹2,059, an increase of ₹114.50. Tejinder Singh Renu, president of the Nagpur Residential Hotels Association (NRHA), acknowledged that price fluctuations are understandable in such volatile times but emphasized the importance of maintaining consistent supply to avoid further disruptions.

Edible Oil Prices Climb in Wholesale Markets

The ripple effects of the conflict extend beyond fuel to edible oils, with wholesale prices experiencing sharp upticks. According to Dattatray Yenurkar, an edible oil wholesale dealer in Nagpur, prices have risen by ₹100 to ₹200 per 15 kg in recent days. Refined oils, such as soybean and sunflower, which are primarily imported from Gujarat to Nagpur, saw increases of around ₹200. Similarly, groundnut oil, flaxseed oil, and mustard oil prices climbed by approximately ₹100 to ₹150. Yenurkar attributed these hikes to disruptions in the global supply chain, as raw materials are sourced from various countries affected by the geopolitical tensions.

Household Budgets Under Strain

Residents like Babita Chillate from Itwari are grappling with the dual burden of rising fuel and cooking oil costs. She noted that managing household budgets has become increasingly difficult, urging authorities to keep LPG cylinder prices in check to prevent families from having to make drastic adjustments. The combined impact of these price hikes is not only straining individual finances but also threatening the viability of small businesses that rely on these commodities.

Detailed LPG Rate Changes

The price adjustments across various LPG cylinder sizes are as follows:

  • 14 kg cylinder: Old rate ₹905, New rate ₹964.50
  • 2 kg cylinder: Old rate ₹289, New rate ₹299
  • 5 kg cylinder: Old rate ₹590, New rate ₹618
  • 19 kg cylinder: Old rate ₹1,944.50, New rate ₹2,059
