A stampede-like situation unfolded at a shopping mall in Mumbai's Malad area on Saturday after a retailer announced a Re 1 sale, triggering a massive rush of shoppers. The incident left several people injured, though no fatalities were reported.
Chaos at the Mall
The announcement of the flash sale, which offered items for just one rupee, drew hundreds of eager customers to the mall. Witnesses described scenes of pushing and shoving as the crowd surged towards the store, leading to a near-stampede. Security personnel struggled to control the situation, and some people fell, sustaining minor injuries.
According to a mall spokesperson, the sale was intended to be a limited-time promotion, but the overwhelming response caught management off guard. "We did not anticipate such a huge turnout. The security arrangements proved inadequate," the spokesperson told reporters.
Injuries and Response
Local authorities confirmed that at least 12 people were treated for minor injuries, including bruises and fainting. Emergency services were called to the scene, and the sale was immediately halted. The injured were given first aid at the mall's medical room, and a few were taken to a nearby hospital for observation.
"It was a scary experience. People were pushing from all sides, and I couldn't breathe," said Priya Sharma, a shopper who was caught in the crowd. Another witness, Rohan Desai, added, "The mall staff seemed unprepared. There was no proper crowd management."
Investigation Underway
The Mumbai Police have launched an investigation into the incident. An officer stated, "We are looking into whether the mall had obtained necessary permissions for such a sale and if they followed safety protocols. Action will be taken if any lapses are found." The mall management has issued an apology and assured cooperation with the authorities.
This incident highlights the risks of aggressive promotional sales in crowded urban spaces. Experts emphasize the need for better crowd control measures and prior risk assessment for such events to prevent future mishaps.
