Adani Group Chairman Reviews Progress of Major Bihar Power Plant Project

In a significant development for Bihar's energy infrastructure, Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, conducted a site visit to Sirmatpur village in Pirpainti, Bhagalpur district, on Sunday. The purpose of the visit was to assess the advancement of the proposed 2,400MW ultra super critical thermal power plant (USCTPP) being developed by Adani Power Limited (APL).

Strategic Site Visit and Environmental Commitment

During his inspection of the project site located in the Kahalgaon subdivision, Adani engaged with local officials and community representatives to discuss the plant's progress. Demonstrating a commitment to environmental sustainability, he participated in a tree-planting initiative at the location. This visit is widely regarded as a crucial step in accelerating the implementation of the power generation facility and exploring opportunities for establishing supplementary industrial projects in the surrounding area.

Project Specifications and Contractual Details

The thermal power plant is being constructed under the design, build, finance, own, and operate (DBFOO) model, with a substantial investment of Rs 30,000 crore. In August 2025, APL secured a letter of intent from the Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited (BSPGCL) to supply 2,274MW of electricity from the upcoming Pirpainti facility to both the North Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited (NBPDCL) and the South Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited (SBPDCL).

As per the agreement, APL will provide power from the greenfield 2,400MW USCTPP to the state. Project timelines indicate that the first unit will be operational within 48 months of receiving approval, with the final unit commissioned within 60 months. The plant will utilize allocated coal linkages for fuel supply, ensuring a reliable energy source.

Economic Impact and Employment Generation

The USCTPP is projected to have a transformative economic impact on the region. During the construction phase, the project is expected to generate direct and indirect employment for over 10,000 individuals. Once fully operational, it will provide nearly 3,000 permanent jobs. Additionally, the initiative is anticipated to stimulate industrial activity, promote comprehensive regional development, and create new employment opportunities for local residents as well as individuals from other areas.

Geographical Advantages and Infrastructure

Spanning 479 hectares, the plant's location has been selected for its strategic geographical advantages. The site offers excellent logistical benefits, with the Ganga River to the north, a national highway to the south, and proximity to a railway station. This infrastructure facilitates efficient coal transportation and access to essential resources, enhancing the plant's operational efficiency.

Political Support and Public Endorsement

The project has received strong backing at both national and local levels. Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually laid the foundation stone for the USCTPP in September 2025. Furthermore, during an environmental public hearing held in January of this year, the project garnered unanimous support from representatives of various panchayats, local villagers, and residents. This widespread endorsement has cleared the path for the commencement of construction activities, marking a collaborative effort towards advancing Bihar's energy security and economic growth.
