Ballia Railway Station Pioneers North India's First Premium Apparel Store
In a landmark development for railway infrastructure, Ballia railway station in Uttar Pradesh has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first station in north India to feature a premium multibrand apparel store on its premises. This initiative, unveiled on the occasion of Holi, marks a strategic step towards modernizing railway facilities and enhancing passenger amenities.
A Visionary Move by Railway Officials
The project was spearheaded by Ashish Jain, the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Varanasi under the North Eastern Railway (NER), and Sheikh Rahman, the divisional commercial manager. According to Ashok Kumar, the division's spokesperson, this move places Ballia station in an elite group that includes railway stations from the Guntakal, Secunderabad, Bengaluru, and Mysuru divisions. The initiative is part of a broader effort to transform railway stations into modern hubs, providing better facilities under the NER's jurisdiction.
Policy-Driven Initiative and Strategic Planning
The store's establishment was guided by a policy issued by the Railway Board on August 11, 2025, which aimed to boost non-fare revenue and sales of non-catering items. In response, Jain and Rahman formulated a detailed action plan to open a premium branded apparel store at a railway station within the division. To ensure the project's success, Rahman and his team conducted extensive market surveys, gathering passenger feedback to identify the need for such a facility.
During these surveys, Ballia station emerged as the ideal location, with passengers expressing a clear demand for a multi-brand clothing store. This feedback-driven approach ensured that the initiative aligned with passenger needs and expectations.
Efficient Implementation and Public-Private Partnership
An underutilized section of an old waiting hall on the station premises was identified for the store, optimizing existing space without disrupting station operations. The vendor for the store was selected through a transparent e-auction process, adhering to fair practices.
Under a public-private-partnership (PPP) scheme, the company awarded the opportunity to operate the store will pay Rs 4.4 lakh per annum to the railways, contributing to revenue generation. The entire construction of the store was completed by the licensee in an impressive 54 days, showcasing efficient project execution and minimal disruption to station activities.
Enhancing Passenger Experience and Station Aesthetics
Officials emphasized that the opening of the store is designed to provide enhanced amenities to passengers, beautify the station, and develop it into a city center. This aligns with the railways' goal of creating more welcoming and functional spaces for travelers, moving beyond traditional services to offer modern retail options.
By integrating premium retail into railway stations, the NER aims to not only increase non-fare revenue but also improve the overall travel experience, making stations more than just transit points but vibrant community hubs.
