Construction Worker Fatally Falls from Chennai Metro Project, Safety Protocols Under Scrutiny
A tragic incident has struck the ongoing Phase II Metro project in Chennai, resulting in the death of a young construction worker and raising serious questions about workplace safety standards. On Friday night, a 23-year-old laborer from Jharkhand fell from an elevated section of the Metrorail project on the Poonamallee-Vadapalani route, leading to a police investigation into potential safety failures.
Details of the Fatal Accident
The accident occurred at pillar 185 on Arcot Road in Valasaravakkam, where Soray Ganjhu, who had been employed on the Valasaravakkam stretch for the past 11 months, was engaged in structural work. According to fellow workers, Ganjhu lost his balance and plummeted to the ground, sustaining severe head injuries. He was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival. His body has since been transferred to a government hospital for a postmortem examination.
Police Investigation and Safety Concerns
The Valasaravakkam police have registered a case and are meticulously examining whether standard safety protocols were followed at the construction site. Key areas under scrutiny include the use of harnesses and safety nets, which are mandatory for all Metro Rail personnel working at elevated heights. Preliminary investigations suggest that some workers do not consistently wear the required protective equipment, prompting police to question site supervisors and representatives of the private contracting firm involved.

CMRL joint director (public relations) Ilavarasi emphasized that stringent safety measures are implemented across all construction sites to ensure worker safety. "We are cooperating fully with the police investigation," she stated, underscoring the organization's commitment to transparency. The Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch, where the incident occurred, is in the final stages of completion and is expected to be opened for public transportation soon, adding urgency to the safety review.
