East Coast Railway Achieves Major Tunnel Breakthroughs in Eastern Ghats

The East Coast Railway (ECoR) has marked a significant achievement in infrastructure development by successfully breaking through five tunnels during the 2025–26 financial year across the challenging terrain of the Eastern Ghats in Odisha. This engineering feat represents substantial progress in key railway projects aimed at enhancing regional connectivity.

Precision Engineering in Koraput-Singapur Road Project

The latest breakthrough occurred on April 14 with Tunnel No. 30, measuring 1,043 meters in length, located in the Sikarpai-Keutguda section of the Koraput-Singapur road doubling project. Railway officials confirmed that this tunnel was constructed along a difficult 5-degree curve and was excavated simultaneously from both ends, achieving what they described as "100 per cent alignment accuracy."

An official release emphasized that "this reflects exceptional engineering precision, advanced surveying techniques and meticulous execution under difficult geological conditions." The challenging topography of the Eastern Ghats required sophisticated engineering approaches to ensure structural integrity and alignment.

Major Progress in Khurda Road-Balangir New Line

The railway zone reported substantial advancements in the Khurda Road-Balangir new line project, where two significant tunnels were completed. Tunnel T-4, stretching 4,185 meters, represents the longest tunnel on this route, while Tunnel T-2 measures 1,775 meters. Together, these two tunnels account for nearly 6 kilometers of tunneling through the hilly terrain.

Additional progress included the completion of Tunnel T-5 and T-6, each measuring 250 meters, in July 2025, followed by Tunnel T-7, spanning 1,975 meters, in November 2025. The official statement noted that these accomplishments "mark substantial advancement in finishing works" for the project.

Quantifiable Infrastructure Achievements

During the 2025–26 financial year, East Coast Railway achieved the following measurable infrastructure milestones:

  • Total tunnel breakthroughs: 7,051 meters across five tunnels
  • Completed with lining and related works: 2,475 meters of tunnels
  • Key doubling sections progressed: Koraput–Rayagada and Koraput–Singapur Road corridors

Strategic Importance for Regional Development

The railway authority emphasized the broader significance of these infrastructure achievements, stating that "these achievements are critical for the timely completion of key railway projects that will significantly enhance connectivity between coastal and western Odisha."

The completed tunnels will deliver multiple benefits for the region:

  1. Improved capacity on vital freight and passenger corridors
  2. Enhanced connectivity between remote tribal regions and mainstream economic activity
  3. Reduced travel times and transportation costs
  4. Strengthened economic integration across Odisha

The East Coast Railway's tunnel breakthroughs in the Eastern Ghats represent a major step forward in India's railway infrastructure development, particularly in challenging geographical regions that have historically faced connectivity challenges. These engineering accomplishments demonstrate how advanced construction techniques can overcome difficult terrain while maintaining precision and safety standards.
