Noida Semiconductor Plant Foundation Ceremony Set for February 21
The foundation stone for a major semiconductor manufacturing facility, a joint venture between the HCL Group and Foxconn, will be laid on February 21 in Sector 28 of the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) area in Noida. This marks a significant milestone in India's push to become a global electronics manufacturing hub.
High-Profile Ceremony with PM Modi's Virtual Address
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address the gathering via video conferencing, underscoring the national importance of this project. The event at the project site will be attended by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw.
Substantial Investment and Land Allocation
The project, to be executed through the joint venture company India Chip Pvt Ltd, involves a substantial investment of Rs 3,706 crore. The Uttar Pradesh state government has allocated 48 acres of land in Sector 28 specifically for establishing this advanced manufacturing plant.
Part of National Semiconductor Mission
This facility is one of six semiconductor manufacturing units approved by the Government of India under the ambitious India Semiconductor Mission. It is strategically positioned to strengthen the domestic electronics supply chain.
Production Capacity and Product Focus
The plant is designed with a robust production capacity:
- 20,000 wafers per month
- 36 million display driver chip units per month
These display driver chips are critical components used in a wide array of devices, including:
- Mobile phones
- Laptops and personal computers
- Automobiles
- Various other devices equipped with display panels
Employment Generation and Infrastructure Requirements
Once fully operational, the semiconductor unit is projected to create approximately 3,780 direct jobs, providing a significant boost to local employment. The facility will require substantial infrastructure support, including a daily electricity requirement of 19,000 KVA and a water supply projected at around 2,000 million liters per day (MLD).
Catalyst for Regional Electronics Cluster Development
Officials anticipate that this project will act as a catalyst for the development of a comprehensive electronics and semiconductor cluster in the YEIDA region. Its strategic proximity to the upcoming Noida International Airport is expected to enhance logistics and supply chain efficiency, attracting further investments and ancillary industries to the area.
This initiative represents a critical step forward in India's strategy to reduce import dependency in the electronics sector and establish a self-reliant semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem within the country.
