India Achieves Billion-Tonne Coal Production Milestone for Second Year
India has once again crossed the significant threshold of one billion tonnes in annual coal production, marking the second consecutive year of achieving this milestone. The country reached the one-billion-tonne mark on March 20, following a record production of 1,048 million tonnes in the 2024-25 financial year.
Government Assures Adequate Stocks for Rising Energy Needs
The Ministry of Coal has confirmed that thermal power plants across the nation are maintaining sufficient coal stocks to address the escalating energy demands, particularly as summer approaches. This strategic stockpiling is crucial for ensuring uninterrupted power supply to industries and households.
The ministry emphasized that this production achievement highlights India's increasing self-reliance in the energy sector and its dedication to securing a steady fuel supply for critical industries. Enhanced and sustained coal output has empowered the country to effectively manage growing energy requirements while enabling the power sector to uphold record inventory levels at coal-based thermal plants.
Record Production and Stockpile Details
Earlier this month, the government reported an impressive 200 million tonnes of coal production from commercial and captive mines. Current inventories reveal that thermal power plants hold over 53 million tonnes of coal, which is adequate to meet demand for approximately 23 days at present consumption rates.
Additionally, pithead coal reserves at various captive and commercial mines are estimated at around 147 million tonnes. This figure excludes stocks in transit, at ports, and in storage facilities, further bolstering the nation's energy security buffer.
Anticipated Power Demand and Coal's Dominant Role
According to projections from the Central Electricity Authority, power demand this year is expected to reach 265-270 gigawatts. Higher quantities of coal will be essential during the summer months as electricity consumption surges due to increased air conditioning usage.
Despite renewable energy sources now contributing nearly 52% to the energy mix, coal-based thermal power continues to be the cornerstone of India's electricity generation. The sector boasts an installed capacity of almost 250 gigawatts, underscoring its pivotal role in meeting the nation's power needs.
This sustained coal production and strategic stock management demonstrate India's proactive approach to energy security, ensuring that the infrastructure is prepared to handle peak demand periods while supporting industrial growth and economic stability.
