Kanpur Metro Corridor-2 Achieves Major Milestone with Rail Laying
Construction work on the Kanpur Metro Rail Project's Corridor-2, stretching from CSA to Barra-8, has reached a significant milestone as progress continues at a rapid pace. While track construction on the balance section of Corridor-1, from Kanpur Central to Naubasta, nears completion, welding and laying of rails have now commenced on Corridor-2, marking a crucial step forward in the city's urban transit development.
Progress on Underground and Surface Sections
In the coming days, track slab casting work will also begin under this corridor. At present, the process of welding and laying the first set of rails was initiated between the Corridor-2 ramp, located near the depot, and Kakadeo station. This activity follows the successful completion of tunnelling work on the 'downline' of Corridor-2 on February 9, which paved the way for these rail operations in the underground section.
Advanced Technology and Equipment in Use
For this purpose, a Flash Butt Welding (FBW) plant was lowered underground through the ramp near the Corridor-2 depot. This plant is being utilized for welding the rails, which are subsequently transported and laid inside the underground tunnel with the assistance of tractors and other specialized equipment. After completion of rail laying, track slab casting will be initiated, with provisions also made for the installation of Derailment Guards and the Third Rail system.
Innovative Track Design for Enhanced Performance
Kanpur Metro employs ballast-less tracks for train operations, which are gravel-free and offer superior durability. The rails being installed are manufactured using head-hardened technology, a method also deployed in high-speed freight corridors. Ballastless tracks require minimal maintenance and boast a longer lifecycle, contributing to cost-efficiency and reliability. In the underground section, Mass Spring Systems will be installed at designated locations to absorb vibration and reduce noise levels, ensuring a smoother and quieter ride for passengers.
Leadership and Commitment to Timelines
Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd Managing Director Sushil Kumar expressed his satisfaction with the progress, stating, "I am pleased that our entire team and executing agencies are firmly committed to achieving project targets within the stipulated timeline." This commitment underscores the dedication to advancing Kanpur's metro infrastructure, which is set to transform public transportation in the region.
