LPG Shortage in Jamshedpur Sparks 20% Surge in PNG Connection Demand
LPG Shortage Drives 20% PNG Demand Surge in Jamshedpur

LPG Shortage Triggers Sharp Rise in PNG Demand Across Jamshedpur and Seraikela

A critical shortage of LPG refills in the industrial towns of Jamshedpur and Seraikela within the Kolhan division has significantly boosted demand for Piped Natural Gas connections. Officials from the Gas Authority of India Ltd reported a notable 20% increase in daily inquiries for PNG over the past ten days, highlighting a shift in consumer preference amid the ongoing crisis.

Surge in Customer Inquiries and Call Volumes

Gauri Shankar Mishra, General Manager of GAIL India for the Jamshedpur circle, disclosed that their customer service cell, which typically handles an average of ten calls per day, has seen this number triple recently. "In the last 10 days, our daily call volume has surged, reflecting growing public interest in piped gas as a reliable alternative," Mishra stated.

Similarly, in the neighboring area of Seraikela, GAIL Gas is now receiving approximately twenty calls daily, a substantial rise from the usual five calls. This uptick underscores the widespread impact of the LPG shortage on household and commercial sectors.

Current PNG Infrastructure and Expansion Plans

Presently, Jamshedpur boasts 9,000 household piped gas connections, with 5,000 actively in use. Additionally, seventy hotels and restaurants are connected to the PNG network. GAIL has ambitious plans to augment this infrastructure by adding 5,000 new household connections within the next eight months.

In Seraikela-Kharsawan district, specifically in Adityapur and Gamharia, there are 8,000 household connections, of which 2,000 are operational. H P Srivastava, General Manager of GAIL Gas, emphasized that the recent crisis has heightened awareness of PNG's economic benefits. "The bulk demand is primarily from residential flats with existing supply lines, and we aim to introduce 10,000 new connections in the coming six months," Srivastava explained.

Broader Implications and Future Outlook

The LPG shortage has not only disrupted daily life but also prompted a reevaluation of energy sources among residents. PNG, offered by GAIL since 2017 to households, industries, and the hospitality sector in Kolhan, is emerging as a cost-effective and dependable solution. This trend may influence long-term energy consumption patterns in the region, potentially reducing reliance on traditional LPG cylinders.

As GAIL accelerates its expansion efforts, the increased adoption of PNG could alleviate future supply chain vulnerabilities, ensuring a more stable energy supply for Jamshedpur and Seraikela's growing populations.
