Massive Fire Destroys Three Scrapyards in Bethora-Ponda
A significant fire incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, completely gutting three scrapyards located in the Bethora-Ponda area. The blaze, which erupted around 3 am, caused extensive damage to the properties but fortunately resulted in no human injuries or casualties.
Firefighting Efforts and Water Usage
Deputy Director of the Fire Services Department, Rajendra Haldankar, who personally inspected the site, provided detailed information about the response. Firefighting teams from multiple stations—including Ponda, Kundaim, Margao, and Curchorem—were mobilized to combat the inferno. A total of five fire tenders were deployed, making an impressive 22 trips to the location to control the flames.
The firemen utilized approximately one lakh litres of water to successfully douse the fire, highlighting the intensity and scale of the incident. Haldankar commended the staff for their prompt action, noting that despite congested road conditions leading to the scrapyards, they reached the spot immediately and managed to bring the situation under control effectively.
Causes and Safety Violations
According to Haldankar, the fire spread rapidly and engulfed the entire scrapyard area primarily due to the large quantities of plastic waste accumulated on the premises. This combustible material fueled the flames, making containment efforts more challenging.
Investigations have revealed serious lapses in fire safety protocols at the scrapyards. The operators were found to have no firefighting tools in place, despite such equipment being mandatory under safety regulations. Additionally, there was a delay in reporting the incident; the fire broke out at around 3 am, but the operators informed the Ponda fire station only about an hour later.
In response to these violations, the fire services department has directed the scrapyard operators to submit all relevant documents regarding the permissions required to operate their facilities. This move aims to ensure compliance with safety standards and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Suspicion of Sabotage
Adding a layer of intrigue to the incident, one of the scrapyard operators, Nadeer Siddiqui, has raised suspicions of possible sabotage. Siddiqui mentioned that CCTV systems were installed inside the scrapyards, and he believes that the footage could help identify the culprits responsible for the fire. This allegation suggests that the cause of the fire might not be accidental, prompting further investigation into potential malicious intent.
