The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) has unveiled a comprehensive roadmap to enhance the collection, processing, and utilisation of construction and demolition (C&D) waste in the city. During a recent review meeting of the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), the civic body announced plans for a new 400-tonne-per-day (TPD) C&D waste processing plant, expected to become operational by February 2027.
Current Collection Infrastructure and Expansion
According to officials, Gurgaon requires 12 C&D waste collection points based on the norm of one collection point for every 25 square kilometre grid. Currently, collection facilities are operational at Basai and Begampur Khatola. Additional centres at Babupur and Daulatabad are slated to become operational before the end of the month.
Furthermore, MCG has identified 20 locations to establish secondary C&D waste collection centres. These include sites in Sectors 46, 47, 4, 21, 22, 38, and 40, Palam Vihar C2 Block, Sarai STP, Ullawas Road, Kadipur, Sector 56 and 57 boosting stations, Atul Kataria Chowk green belt, Kadarpur, and a vacant plot in Baliyawas village, among others. “We have identified 20 sites to be developed as secondary waste collection centres for C&D waste,” an MCG official stated.
Processing and Utilisation Targets
The civic body also presented data on C&D waste processing and utilisation. During the last financial year, 3.3 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of processed waste were sold in the private market, while 11,584 MT were procured by government agencies. MCG estimates that the city will generate approximately 1,100 TPD of processed C&D products. Of this, the corporation has set a target of 100 TPD offtake by government agencies and 1,000 TPD by private agencies.
Awareness and Promotion
MCG also plans to undertake information, education, and awareness (IEA) activities to increase awareness of processed materials and promote the use of processed C&D waste in municipal works.
