Mysuru Silk Park Budget Announcement to Revitalize Sericulture Sector
The Karnataka government's recent budget announcement of establishing a silk park at the Thandavapura Industrial Area in Mysuru has provided a significant boost to the region's sericulture community. This initiative is poised to modernize the sector, enhance quality silk production, and improve the incomes of farmers and weavers across the historic sericulture hubs of Mysuru and Chamarajanagar districts.
Farmer Federation Calls for Swift Implementation
Mysuru District Farmers Federation vice-president Attahalli Devaraj emphasized the urgency of the project, stating, "With the government announcing the establishment of the silk park in Mysuru, district administration officials must expedite the setting up of this unit in the home district of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. They should promptly secure all necessary approvals to commission the park."
Comprehensive Benefits of the Silk Park
The establishment of this silk park is designed to facilitate a wide range of cocoon post-processing activities, including:
- Reeling and weaving operations
- Digital embroidery and twisting processes
- Packaging and quality testing facilities
- Marketing infrastructure development
This comprehensive approach will not only boost high-quality silk production but also significantly increase the income of farmers, weavers, and silk reelers throughout the region. Many of these stakeholders operate in the twin districts of Mysuru and Chamarajanagar, areas once renowned for their thriving sericulture activities, mulberry cultivation, cocoon production, and silk manufacturing.
Empowering Women Entrepreneurs and Enhancing Marketing
The silk park initiative holds particular promise for women entrepreneurs engaged in weaving and reeling silk across these districts. With the state government having already established cocoon markets in Kollegal and the APMC in Mysuru, this new park will further facilitate sericulture marketing promotion activities, creating a more robust ecosystem for the industry.
Current Sericulture Landscape and Implementation Plans
According to available data, approximately 34,153 growers are currently engaged in sericulture activities across 13,780 hectares of land, with 2,500 hectares specifically located in the Mysuru and Chamarajanagar districts.
Deputy Director of Sericulture Rachappaji provided details about the broader initiative, noting that "the state government has announced the establishment of silk parks in multiple locations including Thandavapura in Mysuru, along with Sidlaghatta, Ramanagara, Haveri, and Kalaburagi." Once the department receives official communication, it will coordinate with the Department of Commerce and Industries and district administration to take further steps toward establishing these silk parks.
This strategic investment represents a concerted effort to revive and modernize Karnataka's traditional sericulture industry, positioning it for sustainable growth and enhanced competitiveness in both domestic and international markets.
