Nagpur Auto Drivers Stage Protest Over Soaring LPG Prices
In a significant demonstration of discontent, autorickshaw drivers in Nagpur gathered at the collector's office on Tuesday to voice their concerns regarding the sharp increase in LPG prices and its detrimental impact on their daily earnings. Approximately 50 drivers participated in the agitation, which was spearheaded by corporator Wasim Khan.
Fuel Price Surge Crippling Daily Operations
The protest centered on the steep rise in fuel costs, with drivers highlighting that LPG prices have escalated dramatically from Rs54 to Rs84 per litre. In some cases, rates from other companies have surged to as high as Rs96 per litre. This substantial hike has made it increasingly difficult for drivers to sustain their operations, as their earnings have failed to keep pace with the rising input costs.
LPG serves as the primary fuel for autorickshaws, and any sudden surge significantly erodes their profit margins. Many participants emphasized that daily expenses, including vehicle maintenance and permit fees, are already burdensome. The additional financial strain from fuel price hikes is pushing them toward severe economic hardship.
Corporator Khan Leads Symbolic Protest
"The increase in LPG prices is affecting every auto driver in the city. It has become very difficult to manage daily expenses," stated corporator Wasim Khan during the protest. In a powerful symbolic gesture, Khan towed an autorickshaw to the protest site to underscore the gravity of the situation and draw attention to the drivers' plight.
Broader Concerns Over App-Based Services
Beyond the immediate issue of fuel prices, the drivers also raised objections to the operations of app-based bike taxi services by private players. They argued that these services are negatively impacting traditional auto-rickshaw services, further threatening their livelihood. The protesters demanded regulatory action against such services to protect their economic stability and ensure fair competition in the transportation sector.
The protest underscores a growing crisis among autorickshaw drivers in Nagpur, who are grappling with escalating costs and diminishing returns. As fuel prices continue to rise, the financial viability of their profession hangs in the balance, prompting calls for immediate intervention to address their concerns.
