NITI Aayog Report Calls for Urgent Push in India's Sports Goods Manufacturing
A comprehensive report from NITI Aayog has issued a stark warning: India needs an immediate and timely boost in its sports goods manufacturing sector to catch up with South Asian neighbors like China and Pakistan, which have already established themselves as key players in global value chains. The report emphasizes that these countries have achieved significant scale, specialization, and export competitiveness across a wide range of equipment categories, leaving India at a competitive disadvantage.
Key Findings and Ambitious Targets
The findings are detailed in NITI Aayog's 120-page report, titled 'Realising the Export Potential of India's Sports Equipment Manufacturing Sector,' which was released in New Delhi on Thursday. With India poised to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and actively pursuing a bid for the Summer Olympics in 2036, the report outlines a critical need for the country to enhance its global market share. It proposes targeting an $8.1 billion export opportunity over the next decade, achievable by capturing an 11% share of the global sports equipment export market.
This ambitious goal is not just about economic growth; it could generate approximately 54 lakh additional jobs by 2036, providing a substantial boost to employment and skill development in the manufacturing sector. The report highlights India's current reliance on importing sports equipment, which underscores significant gaps in technology adoption and industrial capacity.
Challenges and Opportunities in the Sector
The report notes that while India has a deep emotional and cultural connection to sports, its involvement in sports equipment manufacturing has remained relatively modest. The sector is largely fragmented and has not fully transitioned to the scale-driven, technology-enabled manufacturing that characterizes today's global sports equipment industry. In contrast, China continues to dominate the market, and other countries such as Pakistan and Vietnam have successfully integrated into global value chains, building expertise and competitiveness across various categories.
To address these challenges, the report suggests that India must focus on moving up the value chain by investing in advanced technologies, fostering innovation, and creating a more cohesive manufacturing ecosystem. This would not only reduce import dependency but also position India as a competitive exporter in the international arena.
Strategic Recommendations for Future Growth
NITI Aayog's recommendations include developing specialized manufacturing hubs, enhancing research and development efforts, and implementing policies that support small and medium enterprises in the sector. By doing so, India can leverage its upcoming sporting events, like the Commonwealth Games and potential Olympics, to drive demand and showcase domestic manufacturing capabilities.
The report underscores the urgency of this push, as delays could further widen the gap with competitors. It calls for coordinated efforts between government, industry, and educational institutions to build a robust sports goods manufacturing framework that can generate large-scale employment and contribute significantly to the economy.
