NMDC Sets New Benchmark with 50 Million Tonnes Iron Ore Output in FY 2025-26

In a landmark achievement for India's mining sector, state-owned NMDC Limited announced on Friday that it has become the first mining company in the country to produce 50 million tonnes of iron ore in a single financial year. This milestone was reached just before the close of the 2025-26 fiscal period, underscoring a period of rapid expansion and strategic growth.

Decades of Evolution Culminate in Record Production

The Hyderabad-based Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE), operating under the Ministry of Steel, highlighted that this accomplishment represents a major step in its evolution as India's largest iron ore producer and a critical supplier to the domestic steel industry. Established in 1958 with the mission to develop India's iron ore resources, NMDC has seen a remarkable fivefold increase in production over nearly five decades. From approximately 10 million tonnes in 1978, the company has now surged to 50 million tonnes, reflecting both long-term expansion and a sharp acceleration in recent years.

Since 2015, NMDC's production has risen from around 30 million tonnes to the current 50 million tonnes, with nearly one-fifth of its existing capacity added in just the last four years. This growth trajectory demonstrates the company's enhanced operational efficiency and commitment to scaling up output to meet national demands.

Leadership and Strategic Vision Under 'NMDC 2.0'

Amitava Mukherjee, Chairman and Managing Director of NMDC, attributed this milestone to the progress driven by the 'NMDC 2.0' initiative, which emphasizes stronger execution, responsible mining practices, and alignment with national priorities. He stated, "What once took decades to build, we have accelerated in just a few years through sharper execution, responsible mining practices, and a clear commitment to national priorities." Mukherjee further emphasized that NMDC's position as India's largest iron ore producer carries a significant responsibility to support the broader steel ecosystem, ensuring a stable supply chain for the industry.

Supporting India's Steelmaking Ambitions

With highly mechanized mines located in Chhattisgarh and Karnataka, NMDC plays a pivotal role in securing domestic iron ore supplies. This is particularly crucial as India works towards its ambitious goal of achieving 300 million tonnes of steelmaking capacity by 2030. The company's record production not only boosts self-reliance in raw materials but also contributes to the nation's industrial growth and economic development.

The achievement of 50 million tonnes in a single financial year marks a historic moment for NMDC and the Indian mining sector, setting a new standard for production capabilities and reinforcing the company's leadership in the field.
