Odisha Government Announces Discovery of Diamond Deposits in Nuapada District
In a significant development for the state's mineral wealth, Odisha's steel and mines minister, Bibhuti Bhusan Jena, informed the assembly on Thursday that diamond deposits have been identified in the Nuapada district. The government is currently examining the technical and financial feasibility of mining these precious stones, marking a potential boost to the region's economy.
Details of the Diamond Discovery
In a written reply to a query from MLA Sanatan Mahakud, Minister Jena revealed that diamond-bearing stones have been found at Kalmidadar in the Nuapada block of Nuapada district. The state has not yet estimated the quantity of diamonds available, and assessments are ongoing to determine their quality and projected market value. Sources indicate it is too early to confirm commercial viability, but the discovery is promising.
The exploration efforts have led to the discovery of diamondiferous lamproite rock in the Kalmidadar area. Geologists have also identified potential satellite bodies of kimberlite and lamproite rocks, which may contain diamonds, in locations such as Pokhanpadar, Supuli, Bharuamunda, Kathiwadi, and Arkholi within the district. These findings suggest a broader mineral-rich zone that could be exploited in the future.
Expansion to Gemstone and Gold Deposits
Beyond diamonds, the minister highlighted additional mineral discoveries across Odisha. Gemstone deposits have been uncovered in the Junagarh block of the adjacent Kalahandi district. Through UNDP-aided exploration, 28 gem-bearing tracts have been identified spanning the districts of Kalahandi, Nuapada, Balangir, Boudh, Subarnapur, Angul, and Sambalpur, indicating a widespread presence of valuable resources.
In a further boost, gold deposits have been located in multiple areas: the Riamal area of Deogarh district, Kuliana block of Mayurbhanj, and Bansapal block of Keonjhar. Mining operations will proceed after a Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) survey and assessment of geological reports. Odisha currently holds an estimated 1,996 kg of gold, with the value of these deposits approximated at around Rs 3,000 crore, underscoring the state's substantial mineral potential.
Government's Approach and Future Steps
Minister Jena emphasized that the evaluation process includes not only technical and economic viability but also other associated issues. The government is taking a cautious approach to ensure sustainable and profitable mining. This discovery could position Odisha as a key player in India's mineral sector, attracting investment and creating employment opportunities in the region.
As the assessments continue, stakeholders are optimistic about the economic benefits. The findings highlight Odisha's rich geological diversity and the importance of continued exploration efforts to unlock its full mineral wealth.
